Great things can happen when organizations seek to collaborate with one another. The district aims to cultivate partnerships among like-minded organizations to uplift the district and improve the quality of life. Organizational partnerships are an essential component to achieving sustained results and long-term progress.
One Day at a Time Recovery
One of the district’s organizational partners is One Day at a Time Recovery (ODAAT). Founded in 1983, ODAAT is an organization in North Philadelphia dedicated to helping people overcome drug and alcohol addiction while providing the additional services necessary to succeed, such as counseling, education, food, HIV testing, personal development and shelter. In Fall 2018, ODAAT embarked on a pilot project with Temple University to help them clean up the streets just west of Broad Street. The two organizations developed a contract for street cleaning and maintenance multiple times a week. ODAAT put together a crew of former participants in their program, providing work and the opportunity to improve the neighborhood environment. This was important for ODAAT, Temple University and the residents living on the newly cleaned blocks. In February 2019, the North Central Special Services District board voted to continue and expand these services. This example illustrates the power of partnerships to do much more than solve one simple problem.
